Hi I am knitting a cardigan and I am up to the right front band
My pattern says
Work 4 rows as for back which is 1st row knit 2 pearl 2
2nd row p2 k2 for 4 rows
This is where I get stuck I have tried a few times and at the end I run out of stitches to rib and the next row I don’t have enough!!
5th row rib 6 (cast off 3sts,rib 16) 5 times, cast off 3 sts rib 6
6th row rib 6, (cast on 3sts, rib 16) 5 times cast on 3 sts,rib 6 …6 buttonholes
Work 4 rows rib
Cast off loosley.
I’m also stuck on the best way to cast off in this instance and to cast on…
Please someone help me I would like to move on with my project!!!
How many sts do you have total for the front band?
The pattern may not be accounting for the fact that it takes 4 sts to bind off 3 sts. After the bind off, you have the extra stitch on the righthand needle and the pattern may be counting that as one of the next 16 rib sts.
You could use the classic bind off (knit 2sts, lift the first over the second and off the needle, knit one and repeat the lift off). For the cast on, a cable or a knit cast on will work. Those are just some of the ways of doing these steps. There are many others that would work too. All are demonstrated on the Free Videos tab under Cast Ons or Bind Off.
Hi salmonmac my band has 110 stitches I tried counting the left over stitch as 1 of the 16 and that still didn’t leave enough at the end!!
On row 5, the pattern is counting the one stitch leftover from the cast off as part of the 16sts. So when it tells you to cast off 3 then rib 16. You should really cast off 3 and then rib 15. That’ll give you 16sts between buttonholes. At the end of the row, cast off 3 and rib 5. That will work for 110sts total.
Row 6 works out as written. With casting on sts you don’t have the problem of extra sts that occurs with the cast off. 6+(3+16)x5+3+6=110
Thanks will give that a go!!Should I cast off and on following the rib or all in knit??
You could do either. I usually cast off in rib.
