Ribbing

Hi, I just started a new project…
BODY PIECE:
Worked back and forth on circular needle from mid front. Cast on 177-sts (includes 8 front band sts each side towards mid front) on circular needle size 6 mm / US 10 with 1 thread of each quality. Continue as follows from RS: 2 garter sts, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, (= front band), 161- stockinette sts, and finish with P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, 2 garter sts (= front band). Work 1 more row like this and continue as follows from RS: 2 garter sts, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, (= front band), rib K1/P1 on the next -160sts and finish with P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, 2 garter sts (= front band).
My confusion is…where was there a decrease of one stitch for the ribbing?? Thanks all!!

Yes, the disappearing stitch. I don’t see a decrease either. I would knit 2tog somewhere in the last row of stockinette before the rib instructions to get to 160sts.

160 could be a typo, but maybe the typo is leaving out the dec because why else would they put the st number in unless they had you change it.

Yes, it could be a typo and that is what I thought…but then the ribbing will be off, no?? Ribbing requires an even amount of stitches, right??

I would do k1, p1 . . . and end with k1, for the 161 sts. Then the last border p1,k1, etc.

?? I’m not sure what you are referring to!!

Yes, that’s why I think they want you do work on an even number of sts, ending with a P1 before doing the front band which starts k1.

It’s a typo or a poorly written pattern. If you do that decrease in the middle of the sweater it will be obvious. I suggest you do it two stitches before the button band begins. If you do it on the band where the buttons are supposed to be sewn, the band with the buttonholes will cover it and you won’t notice it.

Incidentally, this is a knitting cheat that I use all the time. If I’m casting on a lot of stitches, sometimes when knitting that first row I find that I miscounted and I’m either one stitch over or under. I’m not about to rip it all out and cast on again. I’ll just knit the last two stitches together if I have one too many and m1 right before the last stitch if I’m under to get my count correct.

Yes, it probably should be 160 sts for the ribbing.

If you haven’t already started the sweater, why not just use 160 sts between the bands and avoid the decrease altogether? If you have already started, don’t worry about the decrease, lots of patterns call for a decrease when you change between ribbing and stockinette or vice versa.

I agree…it seems to be a very poorly written pattern. And it doesn’t have to be! It is a very cute sweater for my granddaughter and it doesn’t really look like a complicated piece…Thank you for your suggestion!

My point was that if you do K1/P1 for 160 sts, you will then have 2 P1’s right together when you do the front band of p1,k1,p1 etc.

What is the pattern? I am always looking for cute little girl (or little boy) patterns.

The stitch count is placed there so you can check your work to be sure you’re doing the pattern correctly. If you think it’s a typo, you can check this by looking at the next one or two rows where a stitch count appears. Try to figure out how many stitches you should end up with by using the last stitch count and then do the math with the pattern. For instance, you start with 140 stitches last stitch count, subtract stitches from that amount for each decrease, add stitches for each increase, etc. See if your stitch count agrees with what’s written. If it doesn’t, the pattern may be wrong. Generally when you’re doing a ribbing, the number of cast on or picked up stitches will be an even amount, so I would question that 161. There are exceptions, like for a k3p2 or a k4 p1 ribbing, but you don’t run into that one very often, sometimes for hats.

Thank you everyone…again…Now, I read further into the pattern and I don’t think that I should decrease 1 st because later on in the pattern it states a count of 161 sts!! So, as aprilbetty wrote and I just checked this thread now…I was also thinking to just do another pearl stitch…My next row in this pattern will be the 8 sts for the front bands with the stock. st. for the next 10 or so inches…Apparently there isn’t an errata because I checked the website, etc…
@aprilbetty…the pattern is: DROPS Design NO. 112-9 WWW.garnstudio.com
It is for my 11 year old granddaughter and I bought the very yarn it recommends, which was costly, but what the heck…it is for my oldest granddaughter!! LOL It appeared to be a pretty simple design, but as with most patterns, it depends on who wrote it and how articulate and precise they are in the instructions for us “limited” folks…LOL…

My point was that if you do K1/P1 for 160 sts, you will then have 2 P1’s right together when you do the front band of p1,k1,p1 etc.

Maybe that’s the point of having 161 sts, but then do the ribbing at the end of the row beginning with k1 instead of p1…

Yes, in the end all are good suggestions/solutions…I just think the pattern is poorly written…!!

If you think you’ll use this pattern again, you might want to write down the directions for it in a way you can understand as you go. A lot of times I’m sure I’ll remember how to do something, but when I go to knit the same thing a few months later, I forget. I write everything down in a 4 by 6 inch spiral notebook so I can refer to it. I’ll write down changes I made to the pattern or ways that made it easier to knit. This is small enough to fit in my knitting bag where I keep all my gear together. I write down everyone’s size and measurements. I can drop this in my purse and take it with me to the knitting store.

Well…I was notified by the pattern maker (?) of the following changes to the pattern…So, if any of you decided to use this pattern (I provided the pattern info in an earlier reply), I’m posting what she sent to me as a correction:
There has been a correction - see in red:

BODY PIECE:
Worked back and forth on circular needle from mid front. Cast on 161-169-177-185 sts (includes 8 front band sts each side towards mid front) on circular needle size 6 mm / US 10 with 1 thread of each quality held together.
Continue as follows from RS: 2 garter sts, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, (= front band), 145-153-161-169 stockinette sts, and finish with P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, 2 garter sts (= front band).
Work 1 more row like this and continue as follows from RS: 2 garter sts, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, (= front band), rib K1/P1 on the next 144-152-160-168 sts and finish with K1 and front band (= 8 sts): P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, 2 garter sts.
Work 1 more row like this and now continue in stockinette st with front bands as before.
When piece measures 24-26-27-29 cm / 9½”-10¼”-10 5/8”-11 3/8” change to needle size 3.5 mm / US 4, P 1 row from WS and continue as follows from RS: 2 garter sts, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, (= front band), rib K1/P1 on the next 144-152-160-168 sts and finish with K1 and front band (= 8 sts): P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, 2 garter sts (= front band).

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the pattern link. The sweater is very cute. My oldest DGD is 8 years old, and she would love that design. I would substitute another yarn, however.

Did you notice this sentence in the pattern?
"and finish with K1 and front band"
I understand that to mean k1/p1 for 160 sts, then k1 and continue with the front band of p1,k1,p1,etc.

Betty

Yes, now the corrected pattern makes sense…but in the original pattern instructions, it was not clear…and I think it stumped some of the other members of this website, too!! I hope that your granddaughter likes the sweater!! It is a cute one!! Let me know how you make out with it…I’m not that experienced a knitter, but I’m getting there! I guess I’m intermediate…LOL…If you are going to make it, let me know and maybe we can help each other out if there is any confusion…That offer extends to anybody else out there who decides to use the pattern! I think that you can send me a private message and then I’ll share my email with you!! Thanks everyone!!
