Ribbed stitch to crossing cables

Hello, I am a novice knitter and I’ve been using this site to get me started with my knitting and learning different techniques.
I’m currently knitting a scarf and have started it by doing a ribbed stitch. I would like to continue by crossing cables and tried doing so but the result was very strange.

Do I need to start another piece for the cable and attach them or can I continue on the same piece that i have started (ribbed)?[/B]

What rib patt are you doing? K1P1? K2P2? Something else?

If K2P2, you could easily work 2/2 cable. Put 2 sts (over the K2) on cable ndl, hold to front or back…depending on which direction you want the cable to twist…work the first 2 sts (over the P2) on the left ndl and then the 2 on the cable ndl.

Is that what you were looking for?

I’m doing K7P7.
I tried knitting a 4/4 cable (I think…) but the whole scarf just twisted itself.
Must I do a 7/7 cable since the rib patt is K7P7?

You’d not want to do that unless the project was so large it could handle a cable that strong. There are 7-st cables (perhaps not the traditional ones you’re imagining) that you could do over the K portion and then work a P2K3P2 over the P part of the rib. (You could do the K3 tbl for interest.)

A pic/vid of what? ‘Tbl’? If so, there’s a vid for ‘thru the back loop’ here on KH.

Below are couple options for 7-st cables. Not the best pics but ideas.

Good luck on the scarf. Given the sz of the ribbing you’ll need to work whatever cabling you choose in scale with that feature. Anything too small might look out of balance. You may need to swatch some samples and see what you like. Of course, you can choose to ignore the 7/7 rib and work whatever cables you like allowing for the st count that’s available. (Knittingfool.com has examples and instr for cable sts.) Smaller cables don’t req you to add add’l sts to allow for the ‘pull’ factor, so you’ll have to find a happy medium between the huge cables you attempted and opting for something that’s too small.
