I have been attempting the rib stitch for about a week now. I’ve tried k1, p1 and k2, p2, but once I get a few rows finished it always ends up looking just like a regular garter stitch. After 7 or 8 rows I get frustrated and give up. I have watched tons of videos and always do what they show, but it isn’t working. Any ideas about what I am doing wrong?
Oops! I didn’t mean to misspell stitch!
I’m assuming you’re knitting flat? Like a scarf? Not sure exactly what you’re doing, but I suspect you’re knitting the knits and purling the purls.
To get ribbing you knit the knits and purl the purls. What this means is you must know what you’re stitches look like. This an important thing to know in all knitting. All stitches have two sides. A stitch you knit will be a purl on the other side, etc.
Here’s a swatch… You can see the purls look like bump snugged up and the knits look like V. When you turn your work you’ll see the other side.
For a k2, p2 pattern it would look like this -
- kk, pp, kk, pp,
- pp, kk, pp, kk
- kk, pp, kk, pp
That is what I thought I was doing, but maybe I have been wrong. I will keep playing with it and hopefully figure out where my mistake is! Thank you so much for your help!
Here’s a video that shows ribbing, maybe that would help. Make sure you don’t take the yarn over the needle when you switch it back and forth; it needs to go between the needle tips.
I think this is the ribbing link that Sue forgot. One is english, the other continental so choose which one you want.
You might also want to make sure that you’re KNITting the KNIT stitches and PURLing the PURL stitches on each row. Also, remember to check the first stitch of each row to see which stitch you should start with.
For example, if you do Knit 1, Purl 1 across the first row and end with a Purl 1; your first stitch for the next row will be Knit 1. BUT if you end your first row with a Knit 1, then the first stitch of the next row will start with a Purl 1.
Same thing with Knit 2, Purl 2. Check the stitches at the beginning of each row and make sure whether you should start with a Knit 2 or a Purl 2.
Thanks, you’re right I did forget it. I was using a friend’s laptop, and I don’t always get along well with them.
Thank you, everyone! I think I have it figured out! I have NO clue what I would do if I hadn’t found this site!
