Hello. Newbie here. I am knitting a baby’s cardigan (Debbie Bliss pattern). I am working on the button band which has so far said knit 2, purl 2 to end. Rib right?
I have now got to the button hole bit and the pattern simply says Rib 3(rib 2 tog yf rib 8) My question is does it mean I should work 6 stitches ( 2 knit, 2 purl x3 and then rib 2 together) or 1x knit, 1x purl and then the next two stitches together? ie 4 stitches? Does that make sense? Thanks
Hello
Rib 3 means to work 3 stitches total, but to work them in pattern as needed to keep the rib aligned correctly.
Whatever stutch you are presented with kn the left needle, work it as you read it, knit the knits and purl the purls.
For the rib 2tog either k2tog or p2tog depending what stitches are presented, the second stitch will sit on top.
Rib 8 means work 8 stitches total, again reading the stitches to keep the rib aligned.
Does this help or are you still confused?
Hi
I think that makes sense. The pattern also says I should bring yf but it seems to be already on a purl stitch so yarn is already forward. How does this make the button hole?
It’s a yarn over buttonhole. Is the next stitch a k2tog? That would be a very common way to make a buttonhole. So when you take it to the back, take the yarn over the needle instead of between them.
And if the next stitch is a purl, take the yarn to the back over the righthand needle then around that needle and to the front between the needles so you’re ready to purl.
Thanks. I as getting g confused between yarn over and yarn front which I have confused means the same thing!!
Next problem looming now…!!
Many patterns use yo to cover all of these different tasks. Going with yarn over and making sure that you are creating a new stitch is usually a safe way to handle this.

(The one thing to watch out for is a stitch pattern that calls for a yarn forward and after a few sts, a yarn back. In this case the yarn is moving between the needles and the bar created in front of the sts is part of the pattern.)
Thanks. Now the next bit has stumped me too!
Pick up and k4 sts along row ends of front band, rib across all sts of front band, then pick up and k4 sts across row ends at other end of the band.
I really don’t know what this means
Can you help decipher it?
Which Debbie Bliss pattern are you making? Is this perhaps at the neckband or collar?
