I want to do a pattern that is a cable pattern, but it requires reverse st st. I tried searching on this forum and couldn’t figure out what it was. Is it the backwards knitting in the instructions section of this site or something else? And how do I do it?

I believe that in regular back and forth knitting, reverse st st just means the purling becomes the right side of the piece rather than regular stockinette which has the knit side as the right side.

Reverse stocking stitch is just the “backside” of regular stockinette, so instead of the Vs facing out, the purl bump side will be facing out and the Vs will be the wrong side. It helps the cables (which are stockinette) stand out in contrast.
If you’re doing your cables flat, you will purl between them on the right side of the work, and knit the wrong side (usually). If you are doing your cables in the round, you will purl in between them every round (usually).
I feel really dumb. I have done cables before as samplers, but the instructions always said things like “Row 1 (RS) purl” or it was a chart that showed something like “p on RS rows, and k on WS rows”, but I had never seen if called “reverse st st”. Well, I learned something new today. I guess I knew what it was, I just didn’t know what it was called. Thanks for your advice.
