Reinforcing sock heels/toes

Deal. If I do it.

LOL I’ll have to check that out.

I think it’s probably one of those things I’d like to say I’ve done, but not a let’s not and say we did.

It’s actually easy. The method remains the same and doing two actually reinforces what you learn. Plus, no second sock syndrome and you finish with a pair.

If you’re starting from the cuff you’re cast on one cuff and knit for a few inches. Cast on the second and knit for a few inches. Go back to the first and knit down to the heel, do the same for the second. Do both heels, then take turns knitting to the toes. Do toes.

It also works for toe up.

Well, I’ve ordered 2 size 1 circs so I could actually try that in ML when they arrive. I also ordered a 2 at a time sock book, so I’m ready for any and all methods that will avoid the second sock syndrome. I’m still new to sock knitting, but I have a (relative) lot of sock yarn so I’m determined to make a few pairs. I know that to knitters a lot of yarn is always a relative thing.

What length did you buy? 32" is good for single socks. I haven’t do e two at a time, but I imagine you’d want a 40". GG does them that way so she can weigh in when she isn’t busy.

I got 40". I figured it was better to go with longer if I was going to try two at a time. The extra length probably won’t be an issue If I only do one.

I go for the 47" or whatever is longest in the small sizes for 2 @ time MLing. I’d rather have extra cable than not enough. However, having way too much cable is a pain. The only reason I don’t use 2 cics is that I have a tendency to knit with the wrong needle and that can be a real pain to straighten out. Oh, one other thing, the bent ergonomic circs aren’t good for 2 @ time MLing IMHO because the bend makes moving the stitches harder and adds to laddering. I’ll use my Chaiogoo Reds for other things. The Chaiogoo cable is less flexible than my Options cables.

I’ve been looking at yarn at Knit Picks. In their sock yarn they have Comfy fingering, a cotton/acrylic blend. The video they have for it says they don’t recommend it for socks. Go figure. I want cotton sock yarn and think finding something suitable will be difficult.

GG, I moved to ML rather than two circs so I didn’t have to think about which needle, too. I use two now, but only on one sock at a time.

I ordered two size 1 40" from Knit Picks. I got one nickel plate and one sunstruck for 2 reasons. 1- to try them both out, and also in case I wanted to use 2 circs, I won’t get confused about which one I’m on because they are different. Of course the 40 inches might make 2 circs confusing on it’s own.

GG - I really don’t think your feet will be too hot if you get the wool/nylon sock yarn that Knit Picks has. I haven’t worn mine but they seem very light. If you don’t mind a thicker sock, I’m using the Shine Sport for a lightweight sweater. It’s a cotton blend. Might make an OK sock. It doesn’t look like they make it in a fingering weight. Maybe a sign that it wouldn’t make a good sock…

The Sunstruck needles are grabbier than the NPs, I find. I’ve gotten used to it and like it. The cables can be different colors, I can have different tips, colors or material they’re made from, I still manage to knit with the wrong one when doing 2 circs. It’s just me, I think. Well, Jan said she’s done the same thing but I don’t know that she’s used different needles, I have. I hesitate to put anyone else in the same class of distractability that I’m in. I’ll look at the sock yarn at KP again and maybe give some a try. I’ve used LB SockEase and Serenity sock yarn. Both are quite warm.

Right now I’m working on this shawl using Red Heart With Love in boysenberry. It’s not a difficult pattern so far but I kept messing it up on the first rows. It’s something I have to finish very soon and I keep getting distracted in my counting. Thank goodness for lifelines. I think a plain rib or something might have been better.
