Redistributing stitches to begin heel flap

Hi!! I have been knitting for a little over a year, and I  it. I’m tring my first socks, a pair of preemie socks. I’m comfortable with dpns, and I have reached the point where I need to “redistribute” stitches to work heel flap.
I have looked at the video, and looked at other online references, but they don’t tell how to do this. I have 24 stitches on 3 needles, and need to end up with 12 st on needle 1, and 6 st on needles 2 and 3. If I just move them over, then the woking yarn is in the wrong spot. I can’t get the beginning of round to be in the middle of the first needle…I’m just missing something, I know, but I can’t figure it out  Please help!! Thanks so much!!

Hi Jennifer! :waving: Where in Iowa are you? I’m down in SE Iowa, about halfway between Mount Pleasant and Burlington.

ANYWAY…to distribute your stitches, for your needle 1 (which has the working yarn), slip as if to purl four stitches from the needle 2 (using the left end of needle one, from the right side of needle 2), so you will end up with four stitches left on needle 2, and 12 on needle 1. Then slip as if to purl two stitches onto needle 2 (again using the left end of needle 2 from the right end of needle 3) from needle 3, which will then leave 6 stitches on each needle. That should do the trick!

I slide my stitches off onto my free needle and then back on to the needle it needs to go to. Remember - dpns are double pointed for a reason!

Thanks for your replies!! I was trying to slip 2 st each from 2 and 3, but this finally makes sense!!

I live in Council Bluffs, in SE IA–nice to talk to another Iowan
