Really neat buttonholes

I’m knitting a cardigan & am struggling to get my buttonholes looking neat on 1x1 rib. The pattern is for vertical 2 row buttonholes using 2 stitches which is the right size for the buttons I’ve got.

Somewhere on the net I read that for an improved finish when doing the cast off slip the 1st stitch rather than knit it - would that be slip knit-wise or purl-wise or doesn’t it matter?

For the 2nd cast off stitch would it be better to knit into the back of the stitch to make it firmer.

After I’ve completed the 2nd row (which is cast on row) would I be better going into the back of the 2 stitches I’ve casted on to give a firmer finish.

Any top tips welcome. It’s driving me mad keep unpicking it :gah:. The rest of the cardigan which is in double moss stitch is very neat it seems a shame to settle for 2nd rate buttonholes.

Thanks

I use this buttonhole which gives firm edges and can be worked over any rib.

You might try it on a swatch to see if you like the way it works out.
