Reading patterns

Hi, I am knitting a hat from a pattern book “Snow Day Sets to Knit”. I’m making a adult large the pattern reads toddler to adult large. So when the pattern reads Row 1: K5 {3-3-5}, k2tog, (K4, k2tog) across to last st, K1: 62{65-70-77} sts. My question is the knit 5 do i K5 and knit another 5 in the brackets or just knit 5 because that is what is in brackets for the adult large?

Hi Cathy and welcome to KH! Could you tell me how many stitches the pattern call for you to cast on? I’ve never seen instructions written like this before, but if I have the numbers I can work out the math.

I am assuming this is the pattern BlueIce Set and you have worked the ribbing.

The k5 and k2tog will end up with 6 stitches, the ending k1 stitch adds 1 bringing your total to 7, and your pattern repeat (k4, k2tog) ends up being a multiple of 5. I would guess that you do the k5, k2tog, your multiple of k4, k2tog, and end with k1. Just would like the number of stitches in the previous row to verify.

Do you begin with 92 stitches before row 1?

I am knitting the Snow drift set. I started with 90 cast on stitches then i increased to 92 sts.

I started with 90 and increased to 92 sts. i’ll be starting the crown shaping.

Perfect! I love math!

K5, k2tog, k4, k2tog, repeat from to, end with k1.
