Reading lace pattern

Please help me to understand this pattern. It says in notes “Stitch repeat pattern is in bold type in written instructions.”

In the instructions it says “from * to * is one pattern repeat. Work size large - 7 repeats, medium - 5 repeats, small - 4 repeats.”

How do I interpret the above on the instructions that follow for this particular row?

"Sl 1, P2tog, P3, (k2, p1, YO, p1, YO*, P1, K2, P2tog, P3)*, K1 - (97,71,58 st)

Thanks for any advice you can give. Esse

Slip the first st, p2tog, then k 3. The instructions in the () and between will be repeated until you get to the last stitch, then knit 1. If you’re doing the large size, repeat those sts 7 times, 5 times for the med, and 4 times for the small size.

Thanks for responding. So what are all the asteriks about? I guess I don’t understand the significance of stitch patterns repeats versus pattern repeats.

A stitch pattern is a number of sts repeated across a row which you will repeat a certain number of times. This pattern uses both asterisks and () to set off the sts that are repeated. A little overkill… The numbers in the () at the end of the row are the sts you end up with for the different sizes.
