Reading a pattern

I have done the basics- knit, purl and then alternating them both every three stitches, to make a sort of cable effect- my question is how do you move on to something a bit harder?
The patterns and all the abbreviations are like Morse Code to me!
I would like to work on a project beyond scarves and shawls. I had wanted to have a crack at a jumper.
Does anyone have any tips on interpreting/reading a pattern?

All the abbreviations you could need are listed above, to start with.

Most patterns follow the same format. When you have to repeat a series of stitches it usually has brackets or * around the stitches you need to repeat.

I suggest you find a pattern that you’d be interested in and give it a shot. If you have any questions, there are lots of people here who would be happy to translate.

I’m not terribly brave at tackling complex knitting (or even intermediate) either. It isn’t the knitting that scares me, it is understanding the instructions on the knitting patterns. Also having a 4 year old and a 7 1/2 year old who like to interupt doesn’t help concentrating on a pattern. However, I too got sick of playing it safe with scarves, shawls and blankets and I recommend trying trickier projects on a smaller scale. If you want to try a sweater how about making one for a doll or baby first before moving on to an adult one. Good luck.

Thank you both so much for your encouragement!
glomper you totally summed up what I have been feeling about patterns.
I am going to be brave and have a go!
