Reading a Pattern, i.e., right side/left side sweater

Can anyone tell me what the rule is for identifying the right/front of the sweater
What I mean is: do you interpret it as: do you picture it as being worn on the person left or right or holding it infront of you as if you are wearing it right side and left side? I hope this makes sense…

In all the patterns I have made, right front and left front have always been as worn.
