Reading a chart

Hello! I want to start the pattern seen here: http://beavercreekfarm.typepad.com/Belle_Starr_Hat.pdf
I’ve never worked from a chart (on 2nd page) before, but it seems simple enough. One question, though: what do the different facing slashes mean? All the other symbols are explained in the key, but not these. I think it must be some kind of decrease, but not sure…

I think the pattern has a bit of a typo in it, the hatch marks/slashes are supposed to coincide with the explanation in the key. So the forward slash is ssk and the backward slash is k2tog.

Yep the slashes are supposed to indicate right leaning / decs - k2tog - or left leaning \ ones - ssk or skp.

Thanks to all!
Can’t wait to begin my first chart reading adventure…
