Re: Picking up stitches

I am knitting booties and this is the first time I’ve used the pattern. It reads, “Cast on 10 stitches for sole of bootie. Knit back and forth on two needles in garter stitch for 36 rows. On 2nd needle, pick up 18 stitches on long side of sole and 5 stitches on short side of sole.” So far, so good. I understand and have done this. However, the next instructions read: “On 3rd needle, pick up another 5 stitches from short side of sole and 18 stitches on remaining long side of sole.” I believe I should pick up the 18 first, because of the location of the yarn. Does anyone agree or disagree? And also, can someone help me with how to pick up on the short side, when the stitches are still on the needle? Thank you so much. I’m a beginner.

Doesn’t it mean to pick up the 5 stitches from your cast-on edge and then turn and come up the side of the work?

Thanks for the reply. Maybe it does mean that, but I wasn’t sure how to pick up there since the yarn was at the end of the long side. Is that possible to pick up with the yarn there? Thanks.
Also, I don’t know how to p/u a stitch with the stitches still on the needle.

If you watch the “turning the heel and working the gusset” video, that might help you, as you pick up stitches along the heel flap with stitches already on the needle.

I just watched it again and it did help. Thanks! I may have to go down to the knitting shop for help – it’s hard for me to get there, as I just broke a couple of ribs, and thought the knitting would be perfect to keep me “resting” as per doctor’s orders.
Thanks again.
