Ravelry's "in stash"

Off the subject a bit. But mentioning ravelry, I have a question about people mentioning a particular yarn “in stash”. What is the purpose of this

It’s a way of organizing yarn. One use is to simplify the search for yarn that you’ve already bought. When a pattern calls for a specific weight yarn you can search the yarn in your stash for all that might qualify. Faster and easier than combing through bins of yarn.

It can be handy for other knitters who have lost the yarn chicken game and need an extra ball or even partial ball to finish a project. You can search for knitters who have that yarn and color, then request a sale or trade.

Good to know. I usually buy yarn with project already in mind. ( I say usually, I do have projectless yarn already after about 18 months of knitting). But I did notice projects on that site that I liked the yarn but in searching found out it was discontinued. So I could see the benefit of searching “stash” in that circumstance.

I have the same question as I see yarn that I would need for a project however it is in someone stash BUT not for sale. Are you able to ask about these yarns?

Apparently “not for sale” is a default setting and is often ignored when someone is entering yarn to a stash. If you’re desperate for an extra ball of yarn however, it’s worth contacting the owner of the stash to explain and ask to purchase a ball of their yarn.

That’s good to know. I noticed the same thing and couldn’t figure out why someone would list yarns in stash and yet say “not for trade or sale

Thank you for your help!
