Rats - Not Enough Yarn for the Socks I Want to Make

Y’all may remember my post about looking for a pattern for the Lorikeet sock yarn I have.

My daughter’s soccer teammate asked me to make her a pair of socks after she saw me knitting up my Monkey Socks.

Well, it just occurred to me to look at the yardage. I only have 215 yards…It’s just over 60g.

I had decided to make the Broadripple Socks, which call for about 100g of yarn. The gal wants the socks calf high…grrr.

I’m really frustrated.

I guess I’ll put this yarn away…make it into footies for myself later.

According to this site, it’s worsted. The site says that one skein will make one pair of ladies socks. The pattern calls for a minimum of two, though.

I just don’t want to go through all the work and wind up short.

But this site is right, I think. It says this yarn has approx. 50g, which I know is good for footies.

Grrr…

I really hate to do this, but I think I’m going to pull out my Tofutsies #799…the skein I bought in Vegas (the one on the right is the one I have left), and make socks with that.

I’m feeling very selfish right now because I just love this color and want the socks for myself. I guess I could always order another skein later.

I’ll feel better when I make them up and give them to her. I know that.

Since they’re top-down, maybe you can work two at once, and when you run out of yarn, switch to a solid color for the rest of the foot?

You could start a trend!

Why not make the cuffs and foot from different yarns. You should have enough yarn for two long (calf-length) cuffs out of the Lorna’s Laces.

That way you can use the pattern that you want, will get to keep the colorway that you like for yourself, and still have a gift for your daughter’s friend.

Great ideas…that I did consider. But, I don’t have solid yarn! Can you believe that? All of my yarn…just about all of it…is self-striping or variegated!

I’ve already frogged the sock and started on new ones. I’m going to make the Tidal Wave socks. The yarn is so pretty…I’m kind of proud that I’ll be gifting it.

That is a pretty pattern. Be sure and take a picture of them before you give them away. That way you still have a record of it.

Or buy a solid color that matches one of the colors in the yarn. THen knit stripes, 2 rows wide, of each yarn.

It would be so nice if I could run to an LYS and get stuff…but the only thing we have is Joann’s, Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart. They don’t sell any sock yarn…

I’ve started on the new socks and got the cuff and one full pattern repeat done last night. They are going to be really cute.

I made Tidal Wave last year. They are the prettiest socks I own. The pattern is so simple and looks so intricate. Your socks should be bee-yoo-tiful!!
