Raglan sleeve shaping

I’m knitting a babies striped hoodie ( pattern from Lovecrafts Tommy Hoodie) and I’m confused by the sleeve shaping. Probably being very dense but the more I think the more I’m muddled!
The baby hoodie is worked in garter stitch and stripes of 4 rows. The shaping on the Left Front is as follows
“Cast off 3 (4) sts knit to end = 29 (32)sts
Dec 1st at the beg of the next and every following 4th row until there are 23 (25)sts
Then dec 1st at the beg of every alt row until there are 17 (19)sts”
My query is that if you dec 1st on the next row after casting off 4 stitches the shaping is on the wrong side! The front edge of the jacket is straight.
Any help appreciated.

Is it that you dec 1st at the beginning of the next FOURTH ROW and then every other 4th row does that put it on the other side being an even rather than odd row. Does that give enough dec overall. I am not sure that is right just how I read it I have a tendency to over read patterns and the panic about if they’re clear enough and I think there are a lot of patterns that could be written better.

The cast off of 4sts looks like the armhole on the left front. That makes sense looking at the photo.

You’re right that the dec at the beg of the next row and every following 4th is likely wrong and should start at the armhole edge rather than the front opening.
So bind off 4, finish the row, turn, knit to the end of the row and then start the directions for raglan edge.

Did you also have a question about the sleeve shaping?

Many thanks. I think I’ve managed to get this now. Once I start overthinking the pattern I get in a muddle, especially with “next”and “alt” instructions.
Eg I kept interpreting this to end with 4 stitches on the larger size not 3 on the neck shaping!
Shape Neck
Dec 9 sts at the beginning of next row = 8 (10)sts
Work 3 (4) rows dec 1st at raglan edge in next and every alt row
AT THE SAME TIME dec 1st at neck edge in every row = 2 (3)sts.
I’m about to start the sleeves but hopefully understand what I’m trying to achieve now,.

Thank you. This helped. I agree about over reading the pattern. Once I start doubting myself I lose all logic. Especially when the pattern says it is easy.
