If I have too few stitches per 4 inches to obtain the correct guage, do I need to go up or down a needle size? :think: I always confuse this part.

You have to go down a needle size. You want to make the stitches smaller.

If you have too few stitches, that means your stitches are too big. In order to make smaller stitches, which would mean more stitches per inch, you have to use a smaller needle size.
