I’m trying to establish whether if a pattern says do x rows [B]even [/B]of stocking stitch, is that different to x rows of stocking stich?
And am I right in thinking that it says do 10 rows st st, you should do a total of 10 rows (5 purl and 5 knitted). I have always done that, but I’m suddenly worried a st st row might be a row of purl and row of knit (so total of 10 of each in this example) - I’m probably being daft, I realise!
Yes you’re correct, each trip across the needle is 1 row. When a pattern says work even' in whatever, rib, st st, garter, pattern, it just means do it without incs or decs - keeping the st numbereven’ or the same.

work even for 10 rows[/B]… (or 10 inches!) means work the same stitches, with no increases or decreases
as for counting rows, you always count on right side, and as Heather demonstrated, 10 rows of stockingknit are 5 rows of knits, 5 rows of purls.

GARTER [/B](for convenience) is counted by the ridge; 1 ridge =2 rows. (count both sides!)
and when you work garter directions might say: work garter even till you have 5 ridges on right side.
Thank you all so much, that’s really cleared things up for me. I only really got confused because a pattern I was using said I should be on a different side to what I was when i’d completed the correct numbers of lines. I’m hoping it’s a mistake in the otherwise wonderful pattern, rather than something else I’ve missed!
Double check that you’re reading the pattern correctly. Was it you who posted that you purl on the RS, then work 10 rows in St st? So then you would purl the RS row and start your 10 rows with a purl row also.
I had no problem with understanding the bit about purling the line before the stocking stitch, then purling. I only mentioned the initial line of purl before the st st because it indicates that the st st starts on the WS. The problem I have is that I have two separate patterns, one says:
Purl 1 RS row. work 9 rows even in St st. Next row (RS) K etc etc.
while the other says:
(RS) P. Work 10 rows even in st st. Next row: (RS) k etc.
So, as both sections of st st are preceded with a RS row, then both followed with a (RS) one pattern must surely be wrong as one has an even number of st and the other and odd number so surely you would end up with a different side facing you?
This is what had triggered my original query about “even” as I had thought it was the 9 rows of st st was wrong (i miscalculated) so perhaps a st st “row” was actually a knit and a purl row - making the total even so you ended up on the right side. As it was, i’d just miscalculated!
