Usually it says “in stockinette stitch” or “in pattern” or something. Which pattern is it?
Sorry to take so long to respond. I took the pattern off the Internet; it’s Margaret Hubert’s “Very Easy Child’s Tan Sweater”. This is a variation of her original pattern [which I loved because it was so easy and worked up fast]. But I’ve also noticed a few other patterns stipulating the gauge only as so many stitches per inch.
I just didn’t know if it was understood that swatches were always done in the pattern stitch unless otherwise noted. To be on the safe side though, I did do a swatch in both the Stockinette and the pattern stitch.
