Quick question...hope someone can help!

im learning to knit on circular needles. im minutes away from finishing this project… and i dont quite understand the pattern.

i am about to bind off the top of the dress and leave 2 x 4 stitch straps.

this is what the directions say…

bind off 4 sts, k until 4 sts from bind off, bind off 8 sts, k until 4 sts from bind off, bind off to end—two 4-st straps remain.

i dont quite get this. im sure i am supposed to be putting sts on a holder or something.

or should i read this as:

bind off 4 sts
knit until 4 sts from bind off,
LEAVE those 4 sts alone? or knit those 4 sts?
and THEN off 8 sts
knit until 4 sts from bind off
KNIT those or LEAVE those
then bind off to end

???

i hope you understand this question.

HELP!!!

thx

How many stitches are there altogether in the row?

it is a very big gauge there are 48 sts in the round

Hmmm…well honestly, I’m not sure I understand your question, but from the way you wrote your question, I think it would be what I put in bold face below:

bind off 4 sts
knit until 4 sts from bind off,
LEAVE those 4 sts alone? or knit those 4 sts?
and bind THEN off 8 sts
knit until 4 sts from bind off
KNIT those or LEAVE those
then bind off to end

Is the pattern online somewhere? If so, can you post a link. Or even if there is just a picture available, if you could post that, it would probably help.

im not sure how to post a link.

but the pattern is at blueskyalpacas.com

it is called baby jumper.

thank you.

ive done what the directions say thus far…

ive cast off 4 sts
then i knit all the way around, but stopped 4 sts from bind off.

so im looking at it… and the directions say…

bind off 8 sts.

but there are only 4 sts there! and then 4 sts cast off.

do i slip those 4 , then cut the yarn, skip the sts that i bound off at the beginning of the round, and then cast off 8 sts?

it is like there is a step missing in the instructions…

and then this same prob repeats itself …

Is this it?

(By the way-to post a link, all you need to do is copy the link out of your browser window by highlighting it and clicking edit–>copy, and then paste it into your message by clicking edit–>paste.)

YES!!! thats the one. i am doing size 3

im at the bit where is says ‘divide for straps’

OK, I can see why you’re confused! It’s not the most clearly written pattern I’ve ever seen.

Without having done the knitting and having it in my hands, this is how I think it goes (from reading it over a few times and looking at the schematic):

Bind off 4 stitches
K until 4 stitches from bind-off = Knit 4 stitches (I think this “from bind-off” is referring to the previously bound off stitches.)
Bind off 8 stitches
K until 4 stitches from bind-off = Knit 4 stitches (Again, I think this “from bind-off” is referring to the previously bound off stitches.)
Bind off to end.

The two sections where I interpret it to mean just to knit the 4 stitches will be where you have your 4 stitch straps. This is when you’d cut the yarn.

I would then slip four stitches from one of the straps onto a stitch holder. Then follow the instructions that begin with “Reattach yarn to first four stitch strap…” and so forth. When you are ready to do the other strap you would just then slip your stitches back on the needle and proceed.

Then when you have each strap finished and bound off, you sew them to the back of the dress.

I hope all that makes sense!

ah! i think ive got it! i need to bind off 4, then knit 4, then bind off etc.

i was reading bind off 4 knit the whole round and stop at the last 4 sts…

i think ive got it now.

i will let you know how i get on…

my little one has just woke up, so i have to run!!! yiiikes…i was hoping to finish this!!!

thx 4 your help!!!
