Quick question about picking up stitches

For the neckband of the sweater I am working on I am supposed to be picking up some stitches, but the directions say knit the stitches. I am not sure if I am supposed to be picking them up as if to knit, or if I am actually supposed to be knitting them after I pick them up some how. Here are the directions:

With RS facing, sl 6 sts from right front holder to smaller needle, join yarn and pick up and k6 sts along right front neck edge, k10 sts from right sleeve holder, k7, k2 tog, k7 from back holder, k10 sts from left sleeve holder, pick up and k6 sts along left front neck edge, then (p1, k1) 3 times from left front holder.

Now if when it says k6 sts along right front neck edge I am only supposed to pick them up as if to knit, then I have it figured out, but if I am supposed to pick them up and then knit them how do I do that?

Thank you for any help! I just want to make sure I hopefully don’t have to frog anything so I am asking before I get to far.

One more thing…I didn’t see exactly how to do it on the joining and picking up video, so hopefully I didn’t just miss it, but how do you join the yarn exactly? I have been holding it in place while I pick up my stitches then it is just loose while I go on with the project, but I worry about it coming out. Am I supposed to tie it or weave it in somewhere before I keep going? Thanks

Pick up as if to knit. Not pick up and then knit. Is that clear?

Also, as far as joining the yarn, you can do it as you are just holding it in the back and starting to knit with it and as long as you leave a long enough tail it will not come undone and you can weave it in later.

“Pick up and knit” is the same as what we call ‘picking up stitches’–just pulling the yarn through.

When I pick up stitches, I usually tie a slip knot and pull the loop from that through for my first ‘picked up’ stitch. I don’t know if it’s the ‘right’ way, but I feel a bit more secure.

Excellent, thank you! Hopefully I will finish this tonight, but no later than tomorrow. I can’t wait to send this sweater off to my niece, it is her late birthday present.

Thanks again!
