Quick Knit Afghans

Hi everyone;
I just bought a book called the Big Book of Quick Knit Afghans and every pattern has a note saying that the afghans are worked holding 2 strands of Worsted Weight yarn together .Most of the patterns are on 29"circular needles size 17 (12.75mm) Would you be able to use a chunky yarn and only one strand . on these if the gauge of the chunky is the same . The patterns are really pretty and they look pretty simple to do. I get stressed if they are too difficult or they throw a hitch into the instructions like knitting with 2 strands of yarn. :XX:

Well, first, knitting with 2 strands is not a big deal at all. It really starts to feel like knitting with one strand after the first row. I promise!

Second, I think that as long as the gauge is the same, anything goes! :thumbsup:

I did a knitting pattern holding two strands of yarn. Just go slow on the first row or so and you’ll quickly get the feel for it. But I agree with Kelly…if you can figure out a single strand yarn with the same gauge, I would think it would be fine.

I am very very new to knitting and I thought that knitting with two strands was soooo easy!

Good Luck!

Two strands isn’t hard. I have done lots of crocheted baby blankets using two strands and the end result is so nice, I think you’ll really like it!

When you cast on your stitches do you use the 2 strands of yarn for the cast on as well as the knitting

Yep, ya sure do!

Really…try it…its EASY! We’ll be here to offer moral support and Ill lend you a little extra bravery!!

Thanks Kelly I need to buy the yarn but I think I will try one of the patterns in this book they look so nice and pretty. I will yell if I run into trouble. My daughter has already put in an order for xmas

Hey Fannie!

I have that book. I already made Sunny (I think that’s the name :??); I think it’s pattern number 14? (The yellow one with the tray sitting on it.) Anyhoo … just make sure to wrap BOTH strands around the needle and you’ll be fine. I made few mistakes and only wrapped one strand. It’s was difficult to fix, but time consuming.

And I agree that as long as your guage matches, you could definitely use one strand of chuncky :thumbsup:

I put design #9 on the needles several months ago … the pattern itself is easy enough … but it REALLY TASKS THE CONCENTRATION!!! :rofling: One of these days, I’ll finish #9! :doh:

Thanks for the info . The yellow one That is the pattern i picked out to try . It looks so pretty and not too difficult. I have been practicing with some old yarn to see how to handle it and it seems pretty easy . I may change my mind when i get into it for real
