I want to make a double knit hat, I’m not sure if thats really possible, but I’m willing to attemp ^ - ^
I want to make it reversible too, so I’ll have to learn along the way!
I was just wondering, if I use stockinette stitch for both sides of my double knitting, will it curl? And if I use double knitting in circular needles, will it be harder?
I have more questions! If I had a basic stockinette stitch hat, what kind of basic brim could I add? I don’t like ribbed much, but I’ll use it as a last resort, but is there a simple and nice pattern for a brim i could use that, preferably, would not take up much room, maybe an inch or so.
LASTLY! Does anyone have a good just general pattern for a simple hat using circular needles? Or an extremely extremely good one using straight?
I only knit basic hats, one sided only, but you know what? Personaly, I just like an inch or so of garter stitch to brim a stockinette hat! But then again … I ‘AM’ lazy xD Good luck in your quest
Double knitting is kind of a way of getting around the lack of circulars. Also, when you get to the top you will most likely be decreasing which will be a huge PITA in double knitting (if you mean k1, sl1, repeat across the row).
Stocking does curl, but many people like to have a curled brim and omit ribbing for this reason!
A garter or seed stitch rim would be flat and stop rolling.
So I don’t think double knitting is practical at all for a hat (unless you are happy to move to DPNs or ML/2circs for the decreases), and not hugely practical for circs (although certainly doable).
Check out knittingpatterncentral for hat patterns in general.
Yes, you can make a double knit hat. Here is a pattern for one that is on-line. If you don’t want to do one just like this maybe at least it will help you figure out what to do.
