Question regarding gauge and needle size

thanks to knitting, i’ve taught myself how to knit, continental. still a beginner…but my question is this…
oftentimes, i find that to obtain the necessary gauge, i need to drop my needle size a size or two smaller. is this normal? and if not, how do i go about correcting myself??

betsey (delurking)

It can be perfectly normal, not everyone knits at the same tension. Someone who knits tight would have to go up a size or two on the same pattern and same yarn to get the same gauge you do. If you find this a problem - as in you can’t get gauge by dropping needle sizes - you can experiment with different ways of holding your yarn to tension it a little tighter.
