Question of pattern

I have a question about a sweater pattern I just got. It is the Huldra sweater as one size. The chest circumference is 47 inches. It is way too big for me, but I love the sweater. How can I reduce the size?

Ravelry shows 20 different sweaters called Huldra. Who is the designer?

It is Katrina Hammer

This one perhaps?

I would consider changing the stitch count but it may take a little working out to do so. A top down raglan yoke is not a pattern type I’m comfortable to change myself but if you have experience of raglan shaping then there’s no reason why you would be able to do it, perhaps by working out what sizes are possible by reducing by one or two motifs so the colour work pattern still fits.
Starting with a gauge swatch with your yarn would give you information about how many motifs you would want around the hem and cuffs based on the size you’d like.

Another option which I’d probably explore (not being comfortable with totally redesigning the size) would be to find a similar style plain sweater design in a suitable size and work the colour work motifs on it. Some times this means changing the substitute pattern stitch count by perhaps perhaps a few stitches to make a motif repeat fit.

Yes that is the one. I have never done the start of a sweater on waste yarn? Also starting from the middle and going up. I have knit from the top and gone down. Plus a 47 inch chest measurement is too big. I am a size 36 or medium top.

I have not started it yet. I was just wondering how I could reduce the size beforehand.

The starting on waste yarn sounds like a provisional cast on and will likely be so you can go back to those stitches later on to work in the opposite direction.
With regards changing size though it’s not a design I could alter. @salmonmac may be able to offer some ideas though.

You could try going down from the aran yarn to a worsted weight or possibly DK. Making a swatch as Creations suggested will help with the gauge and then you’ll have a feeling for the finished size. You’d have to be careful about shaping and lengths if you change the yarn however.

I notice that the pattern is discontinued but you have a copy already?

You could knit it using a slightly thinner yarn to get a smaller size. This would mean doing some swatches and a few calculations.

For example, the recommended gauge is 17 sts to 10cm. You could try recalculating it at 18 or 19 sts to 10cm.

Remember that the sweater might be intended to be worn oversized to get a particular look. Does the designer say anything about the intended wearing ease in the pattern or on the Ravelry page?

Yes I do. I have never knit with waste yarn and then changing it. I thought it was a mistake in the pattern.

Oops, I am just repeating what salmonmac already said!

We’re just on the same wavelength at the same time!
