Question about yarn for felted projects

I’m about to embark on a GREAT bag - it’s in the book Knitting for Babies, and they call it a diaper bag, but I’m going to make it as a knitting project bag - I am in love with the look of it, so thoguht I’d share!

Anyway, it’ll be my first felting project. When you’re going to felt something, does the yarn have to be 100% wool, or can it be a blend?

it can be a blend but it should be at around 85% wool (or alpaca or whatever) in order for it to felt well. Lion says their 50/50 stuff felts but i think most people have said they had problems getting it done. Of course make sure it isn’t super wash or that it doesn’t say that it can be machine washed because that means it has been treated to keep from doing exactly what you are trying to get done there.

check out the KnitPicks banner ad on this site. If you haven’t tried Wool of the Andes you definitely should. Less than $2 for 100+ yards of wool and it felts great. not a really comfy wearable yarn but great for felting!![/u]

Thanks brendajos! Great advice… Next question: how much shrinkage will there be? The instructions for the bag make it sound HUGE, but I imagine the felting will take care of that…

it will be ginormous…need to see the pics of the felted and pre-felted clogs to truly appreciate the difference. it really depends on the yarn and the pattern though. it isn’t an exact science which i think is what makes it such a scary process for people. but it is sooooooooo coooooooooool!

here’s a pic. this should take you to page 6 of the Fiber Trends KAL. if it doesn’t…well…it is page 6 of the Fiber Trends KAL. Scroll down.

WOW! I pictured shrinkage, but I had no idea! Those ‘before’ colgs are hilarious! Now, of course I’m dying to make clogs… that’l be next. (After I finish the baby blanket and toddler sweater I’m In the middle of, and then after the bag… I love this whole knitting habit I’ve developed, but it does take time!!)
