Question about starting new ball of yarn

Hi all – I’m knitting the ‘Honeymoon Cami’ and I’ve got a question about starting the new ball of yarn. i’ve just started shaping the neck hole – have been working in the round, and the instructions say to switch to straight needles while working the first side (i.e., leaving the front and back left on the round needles while i do the front and back right). The instructions say to ‘start a new ball of yarn’ but there’s no explanation how to attach the new ball of yarn – i just started knitting iwth it, holding the end taut until it was fully incorporated, but i’m not sure that was correct. any other suggestions? maybe i’m missing something totally obvious. the actual instructions are below:

Shape V-Neck and Back
K40[43,45,47,50,53,55], place marker to mark center front V, k 80[85,90,95,100,105,110], place marker to mark center back V, k 40[43,45,47,50,53,55].
Next row: k to 3 sts before V-neck marker, Rdec, k1 (you are now at the marker).

Divide the work and start a new ball of yarn on straight needles: k1, Ldec, k past side marker to 3 sts before V-Back marker, Rdec, k1.

Thanks!

HEY!!! I just asked this question yesterday, lol… You did it just right. I actually knitted the first stitch then used the new yarn and the tail yarn for three stitches. wow you are almost there. I finished up yesterday. This was the first thing I have ever knitted and I was so proud of myself!!! Good luck

ha! oh goody! glad i’m not completely missing something obvious! how did yours turn out? i keep looking at the bust and waist shaping on the needles and wondering how this is going to look when i finally put it on!
