Question about slip stitch

I am working on a sock pattern, and when it asks to slip a stitch, I have always slipped it knitwise, unless it instructs me to sl purlwise. Sometimes it’s on a purl side, but I always sl knitwise. Is this correct?
Thanks,Merrie/WI

This is one of those preference things. I always sl purlwise, but I’m not sure it matters, unless specified.

Thanks CarmenIbanez!
I really didn’t think to much about it before, but I am hoping to make a pair of socks to enter in the local fair.
Thanks again, Merrie/WI

I always slip purlwise on a knit row (and knitwise on a purl row) unless the pattern instructs differently, except (always those exceptions, LOL) if it’s a part of a decrease on a knit row, then I slip knitwise (if it’s a decrease on the purl row, I slip purlwise). I think I read that “rule” somewhere, a knitting dictionary?

If you slip knitwise on a knit row and it’s not on a decrease, your st becomes twisted, unless you correct it on the next row.

Yep, knitwise twists them. The rule as I understand it is always slip purlwise with only 2 exceptions:
1 - unless the pattern instructs you to do so knitwise
2 - unless the slipped stitch is going to be passed over and dropped off.
With regards to ssk though, it’s up to you what left-leaning decrease you think looks best the way you knit: nona has a good post on this, trying various decreases to match k2tog.
