I am doing a pattern that starts off with ribbing (K2 P2 K2…) and I cannot get it to look right. So, I just did four rows of knit instead and then continued on in stockinette and followed the pattern. I’m making a small bag and I was wondering if by me not doing the ribbing will it make a difference in the integrity of the bag. It seems like more of a visual thing since its just on the side of the bag that everyone will see. Anyone know if this was a mistake on my part? Also, can anyone give me some pointers on how to get the ribbing to come out right? I always end up with a very elongated row of messy stitches.

I would imagine that a section of garter stitch, which is what you knit would be perfectly ok. Ribbing is generally used because it pulls in a little, but what you have, I’m sure, will be fine.
When you do ribbing, it’s very important to bring the YARN between the needles between your knit and purl sections. Have it in the back to knit, then bring it to the front between the needles, to purl. After you purl, put it back between the needles. It’s a lot of switching back and forth, but that’s ribbing for ya.
