Question about Rev St St and Irreg, Cable

I’m new to cabling and have a pattern for a sweather that I am only beginning to practice my gauge and pattern. Its in the Classic Elite Yarns Luxe Booklet and is the Wool Bam Boo Cardigan. I’ve cast on 30 st for my gauge.(It says to only do 23 but I wanted more to practice with) Then it says to work in Reverse Stockinette Stich (purl on RS, knit on WS). So after I cast on, my next row is a Purl row. Correct? Ok so I did that. Now I get to the Cable, the legend says Knit on RS, purl on WS, but isn’t that the opposite from what I want? I know I want to cable on the purl side of the work even though the cable part itself is knit, but I guess the Cable chart is confusing me. The Irregular Cable is a 6 st panel with 12 row rep. So on Row 3 you cable and row 7 you cable. I hope I explained enough to have someone help me. Should I just keep with the Rev St St and ignore the legend in the cable that says Knit on RS purl on WS? Are they just saying that to explain that your cables are knitted on a purl row? Have I totally confused you?

I’m reading that your background for the cable is in rev st st–with the purl stitches on the right side.

The cable stitches will have the knit stitches on the right side, so you would knit them on the right side and purl them on the wrong side.

Is that what you were asking?

Sort of, I think I may be over analyzing the pattern as I normally do. You did answer my question but my other question would be why in the Irreg. Cable Chart that they show, why they explain in the legend the opposite of what the background of the cable is. They are explaining Knit on the RS and Purl on the WS.

I think I just had a break through! I think I get the legend now! Because I’m knitting the stitches in the cable, then on my next row, those cable stitches will be purled! Right? So for instance, Say I had a cable pattern that was Row 1 RS: purl 5 st, cable 6, purl 5. Then Row 2 will be K5 st, purl 6, K5! Right? I love when I get these break throughs!! :cheering:

You got it!! I find that when something is confusing, just doing what the directions say helps to clarify it much better than my mind can envision.
