I found a sock pattern that I really want to make, but it calls for size 2 circular needles. I am still a relatively new knitter so I don’t own that many needles. Is it possible for me to use dpns instead? Or should I just go buy some circular needles?

Yes, you can use the dpns. Either will work for knitting in the round.
I prefer using DPNs to knit socks. It’s how I started out and learned to do it, so it’s just how I do it that works for me. Other people prefer to use magic looping or 2 sets of circs. I get confused enough sometimes with just the 4 needles, if you add the cables from the circulars into that mix, especially then working the gusset, I’d end up in a rubber room.
