Question about my yarn

DH bought me a big box of yarn he bought on ebay. It was a sweet gesture but he had no clue what he was buying. Now I have about 9 skeins of this yarn I have no idea what I’m going to do with it.

It’s called Vail Homespun and the label lists each ball as being 100 grams. No other information at all. Ugh!

I know I have to unravel a skein and measure so I know how much I have. How do I tell whether it is worsted, etc? I seem to remember once reading about wrapping it around a ruler and counting or something like that. Of course I can’t find that now.

Can anyone post your tips and tricks to identify yarn?

Ooh! look what I found!

Another thing you can do is the burn test. If it melts, it’s acrylic. If it singes its a natural fiber.

That’s EXACTLY what I was looking for. I knew I saw it before.

Any tips for making easy work of measuring the length?

You could find something that measures about three feet around (like a chair back) and wrap it and count the number of wraps. I have a friend who spins and measures her yarn this way.

I suppose it’s possible to to approximate what other yarns of the same weight have by way of yardage, but I’m not too sure on that.

If you’ve got a scale that measures grams, you could measure a smaller amount and multiply to get the 100.

 Leave it to the math whiz!

:roflhard: Ingrid, I am far from math whiz-y.
