Question about 'Molly' pattern in Debbie Bliss' Junior Knits book

I have what is probably a very silly question, but I’m new to knitting anything more difficult than a hat or scarf, so here goes.

The pattern states:

cast on 8 sts at beg of next 8 rows. 136 sts.
work 30 rows in St st.

My question is - do the ‘next 8 rows’ count as part of the 30 rows that I’m working in St st? Or do I cast on at the beginning of those 8 rows and then knit an additional 30 rows in St st… The pattern doesn’t really specify as far as I can tell.

I’m making two of these boleros - my daughters are going to be flower girls in a wedding early next month and I thought these would be a wonderful cover-up since who knows what the weather will be like.

Please help!

Do that…

thats MY interpretation of it.

Welcome to KH!!!

Welcome! I also interpret that to mean cast on 8 stitches for the next 8 rows.

Be sure to show us this when you finish. It sounds like a nice project.

I concur with lissaplus2.

Thank you ladies!

Ok, next question about same pattern… After I finish the above section, I divide for the fronts - “knit 58 sts, bind off next 20 sts, k to end. Cont on last set of sts for left front, leave rem stitches on spare needle”. Ok, I think I get that much. It’s afterward that I’m not sure what to do. Here’s the instructions:

Left Front:
Work even for 5 rows, so ending at front edge.
Next row K3, M1, k to end.
Work even for 3 rows.

Here’s my questions… First, if I’ve bound off stitches, how do I get the yarn from the initial 58 stitches I knit to where I pick up knitting again after binding off 20 stitches? Do I just use a separate skein of yarn and leave the original with those first 58 stitches? Also, I have no idea what ‘work even’ means…

Thanks for your help! I didn’t think I would have so much trouble just interpreting the pattern…

Your yarn should have traveled with you after you bound off the sts and knit to the end of the row and is still attached to your stitches. To ‘work even’ means stay with the st pattern and don’t do any decreases or increases. Turn and knit to the bound off sts, that’s going to be the L front. Do 5 rows ending at the ‘inner’ edge (right below the bound off stitches). Then do the inc row which is going to shape the front neck.

You did bind off in the middle of a row, didn’t you?

Yes, I did - thank you so much!
