I am a new knitter and would like to knit Saartje’s Booties. I’m wondering about how to knit using markers. When the pattern says to knit to marker and then make 1, does that mean that I should knit to the marker, make 1, and then move the marker? Or does it mean I should knit to the marker, move it, and then make 1? I don’t want my increases to be decentered by doing this wrong.
I imagine this is a problem I’d face trying to knit any pattern with markers, but I am first encountering it now with this particular pattern. Is there a general rule I should follow? Or anything specific to this pattern?
Well, if I read this right… in this case it doesn’t matter because you are increasing in the space where the marker is so either side is fine.
Patterns will [I]usually[/I] tell you what you need to do, but not always. With some types of increases it makes a difference which side of the marker you’re on, but don’t worry about that till you need to.
Thank you so much for your quick responses. I had originally done as you both suggested, increasing before moving the marker. I was concerned, though, that since there are a whole series of increases separated by varying numbers of knit stitches, that the point at which the increases are symmetrical drifts to one side in rows 6 and 8.
I have a suspicion I wasn’t too clear just now. So, here is the pattern I’m referring to, if it helps any.
Okay, I think I was wrong; row 2 is “kbf, k to m, m1,[B] k1[/B], m1, k to last st, kbf” and 4 is “kbf, k to m, m1, [B]k3,[/B] m1, k to last st, kbf”
While there’s 1 st between markers on row 2, there’s 3 on row 4 and 6 which changes to 7 on row 8. Though I think it should read k5 on row 6 instead of k3. The extra sts between markers come from the M1s.
