Question about guage swatch

I’m ashamed to admit it, but I;'ve never made a guage swatch. So far, all I’ve knit are scarfs and dischcloths, so it hasn’t really mattered, but I need to break the bad habit before I try anything more complex! :oops:

Anyway, here’s the question…when making a guage swatch, do I do it in the pattern I’ll be using, or can I just make a square of stockinette stitch or garter stitch?

most of the times the pattern asks for a specific gauge swatch (the pattern wil say gauge: a st X b r = 4"x4" in pattern (or stockinette))

ETA: This is a great example, since it has gauge in stockinette and in pattern
