Question about gauge

Hi a newbie here

I have a pattern that calls for 20 stitches = 4" on #7 needles

I have yarn that I love and want to use for the pattern. It is Stacy Charles Bunny print that suggests using #9 needles and 13 stiches = 4".

So I tried using the #7 needles but had 14 stitches =4"

I kept going down until I got to #4 needles (smallest I have) but I’m still not getting 20 stitches = 4" and the knitting is tight and I’m afraid it will be stiff for a garment.

Am I on the wrong track here? :wall:

Is it not going to be possible to get this yarn to work for this pattern?

Feel free to reply with as much detail as you can because I really want to learn and sometimes knitting seems like a foreign language to me.

Thanks!

It sounds like your yarn is way too thick to get the gage that is called for in the pattern.
if you actually found a needle to get the right gage, you’re right about having a fabric that is way too stiff for a garment. I don’t really have a good suggestion for you. sorry.

sounds like you’ll have to do some major math or buy some different yarn.
Here is a link for how to do the math.

If you want to adjust your pattern to work with the new yarn, this calculator will do the math for you.

Is there a link to the pattern? Maybe you can make a different size and still be able to use your yarn, or maybe the pattern can be modified using the percentage method.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and the links to the calculators! I will try and see if I can make it work!
