Question about cabled hat from SnB nation

I want to make the basic cabled hat from SnB nation. It says to use lamb’s pride worsted weight yarn, on size 8 circulars. I want to usethis yarn, but it is double knit i believe. Last time I made a hat with it, it was really tight fitting. I don’t knit swatches… So, basically, I am wondering if I should use a larger needle size???

If you use larger needles, the fabric will be very loose since the yarn is so much thinner than called for. Try doubling the yarn, maybe.

ya know, as much as i never swatch either i think i am going to have to suggest you swatch this one if you want to be able to wear it and not have to give it away. the yarn is different enough in weight that it is hard to tell which needles you will need to get the right gauge for your hat.

Make a gauge swatch. It isn’t that hard. You can do it. And you don’t even have to bind off. Do a 4x4 swatch to get a good measure and then frog it. I hate having little pieces of swatch hanging around. I sometimes don’t even swatch as big as they say, but enough to get an idea of the size. I used to never do swatches either. Then I got tired of things not fitting right. :verysad:

:figureditout: i just happened to think…I just finished the good ole cabled scarf in the same type of yarn on size 8 needles. Could I use that for a swatch? crosses fingers in hope of not having to make a swatch

pretty yarn

Yeah I would just double up and do a little swatch. Better safe than sorry

everyone say it with me!!!

i don’t know if that will give you the right gauge but someone who is better about swatching can answer that.

Come over here so I can talk to you privately. I don’t do much swatching, either. I’d measure the scarf gauge for a starter, begin the hat and see what I come up with. Don’t say I said anything! It’ll be our secret.
