Question about armhole shaping

Hello. My question is really general… what is armhole shaping? I’m practicing reading patterns (much beyond my skill level just to learn) and I found this pretty sweater vest pattern which requires 4 double pointed needles for armhole shaping. Beyond that it doesn’t really say how to do the armhole shaping!

I can’t visualize how this would work with 4 dp needles. Can anyone enlighten me? Or know of some pictures online that might help my brain connect the words? I tried to google it but with no luck.

Thanks in advance.

Kelly

That may be for the armhole band not the shaping. The shaping is in the body of the sweater/vest. Knit fronts and backs to underam, BO sts on both sides for the underarm, then dec so many sts at those edges to make the armhole curve. Then you knit straight to the shoulder shaping.

OK I re-read it but still I don’t quite get it. The pattern isn’t for armhole shaping is for making an armband. So what I think, and let me know if this sounds right, I evenly pick up the stitches using my 3 dp needles… I guess I would need long ones if I were making this vest? I would then knit in a circular fashion to create the armband.

Still not quite getting it visually though. :frowning:

You could use a circular needle instead, 16" ought to work okay, unless it’s for a child’s size. After you have the front and back seamed together, you have an armhole. You pick up stitches around that for the band. It would be like picking up stitches for a sleeve in the round, except you knit for only an inch.

Ah-ha! I got it!! Thank you!
