Question about a specific pattern

I am currently knitting the JCB Chunky Merino Pin JB752 Sweater.

For the front pattern it states:

‘Keeping continuity of past as set, work 58 rows more. Working 1 st less in rev st-st and 2 sts more in centre Double Moss-st in 9th and every following 10th row. 16 sts at each end in rev st-st and centre panel of 22 sts. Place a marker at each end of last row to identify start of armholes.’

I don’t really understand what this means. Could someone put it in plain English please?

Welcome to the forum!

The shift in pattern occurs on rows 9,19,29,39,49 until you have 16sts at each edge in reverse stockinette and 22sts in the center panel.
I’m not sure what the sequence of sts across the front is but there should be 1 stitch fewer in rev st st (probably at each edge) and 2sts more in double moss.
How may sts do you have now in the center panel and how many on each side in rev st st?

So the pattern has P2tog, m1 and P2togtbl on the 11th row.
Is this where the pattern is 1 stitch fewer and 2 stitches more happens?
I currently have 22 stitches on one side, 51 in the centre panel and 22 stitches on the other side.
Where exactly do I place the markers?

The m1 will increase one stitch and the P2tog and P2togtbl will each decrease one stitch. If all three occur in one row, there will be a decrease of one stitch on the row. If you would like you can quote the entire row. Just don’t give us a large portion of the pattern due to designer copyright.
Are you working this sweater top down or bottom up?
Are the 22sts on each end the reverse stockinette sections and the 51sts the center panel?

Just linking to a different photo of the pattern as it is easier to zoom in and see the stitch pattern.
The rev stockinette is at the outer edges as you thought. The inner panel widening towards the top of the sweater

The entire row (row 11) is:
P20, P2tog, T3F, P2, T3F, P2, C4B, P1, C4B, P1, m1, P2, (K2,P2) twice, P1, K1, P4, K1, P4, K2, P2, K3, P2, K22.

I am working the sweater bottom up.
Yes, the 22sts are Rev st-st and 51sts the centre panel.

As far as your initial question, usually on the left side (left as you would wear the sweater) you would p2tog at the last 2sts of the rev st st, increase a stitch (Make 1) at the beginning of the central panel and again increase a stitch (Make 1) at the end of the central panel then p2tog at the beginning of the rev st st on the right side of the front.
That’s the way this row is setting up:
P20, P2tog, T3F, P2, T3F, P2, C4B, P1, C4B, P1, m1, P2, (K2,P2) twice…
What puzzling is that the second half of the row doesn’t mirrow this.

I’m surprised that the row isn’t symmetrical around the central double moss pattern. The row starts with the rev st st, the twists and double cables and the beginning of double moss
P20, P2tog, T3F, P2, T3F, P2, C4B, P1, C4B, P1, m1, P2, (K2,P2) twice, …
but the second half of the row isn’t a mirror of the first.
…P1, K1, P4, K1, P4, K2, P2, K3, P2, K22.
That doesn’t seem consistent with the photo of the pattern.

Just had a look back, it does mirror the part of the pattern, it was my mistake when typing.

So with the pattern shifting on the 9th and every following 10th row, why is the m1 and P2tog on the 11th row of the pattern? Do I just follow the pattern as normal for the next 58 rows and it will automatically decrease to the number of stitches required?

OK that makes sense. I’m not sure why the pattern shows the shift on row 11, maybe it’s just the first example? Use that shift on the 9th row and then on the following 10th rows (9.19.29.39.49) until you have the given number of sts at each edge in reverse stockintte and in the center panel. Follow the pattern as written but only work the shift (the p2togs and M1s) on these rows.

These pattern shifts are really quite striking and add to the beauty of the cable/moss pattern.

Okay so just add in the m1’s and p2tog onto the 9th and every following 10th rows. Do I need remove anything from that row pattern? Or just swap the 9th and 11th row patterns around?

The total stitch number will stay the same, 2 increases and 2 decreases across the shift rows. The only change will be a shift in the pattern as the center panel gets wider and the rev st st decreases at the sides. This is a case where you’ll look at the pattern that you’ve established and follow it taking the shift into account. Markers at the new edges of the rev st st and on either side of the central panel will help keep you on track and be a reminder that the pattern has shifted.

Since the pattern as written starts the shift on row 11, that’s the first row with increases and decreases. That places the shift on rows 20, 30,40,50 and so on. I don’t know how many rows there are to the pattern stitches but it will help to make yourself a table with a column of the row numbers and a second column of the stitch pattern rows. The pattern rows will likey repeat and this can keep you on track with the shifts.
