Query please re knitting instructions

Hi.
I’m doing this pattern for stripy baby dungarees…and am already having queries before I even start!

I looked up how to do a provisional cast on but am wondering when it says for doing the hem:
Starting with a knit row, work 2 rows in CC and 3 rows in MC
k1 row (on WS) to make turning ridge for hem.
Work 5 rows in st st stripe pattern. Maintain stripe pattern throughout.

Does the above mean? …
Row 1- knit in CC
Row 2- do I purl or knit? In CC. ********
Row 3- change to MC, assume I knit?
Row 4-MC again should I knit or purl??******
Row 5- MC knit
Row 6- knit in what colour? ******
I understand then ive to to do St St so that’s knit then purl.
So will …
row 7 be a knit
Row 8 purl
Row 9 knit …etc?

Starting to think this pattern could be a bit hard even though I’ve been doing alot of lace work…for some reason I find it easier than shaping etc. I guess it’s just different.

The pattern is adorable and very do-able. As you say, it’s just different from lace.

Row 1- knit in CC
Row 2- purl In CC.
Row 3- change to MC, knit
Row 4- MC purl
Row 5- MC knit
Row 6- knit MC
row 7 knit MC
Row 8 purl MC
Row 9 knit MC
Row 10 purl MC
Row 11 knit CC

I would keep the turning row, row 6 the same color and then the next 4 rows the same (MC). Then switch to CC when you get to row 11.

I love starting new projects and this one I’m going to start tonight.

Have no doubt I’ll run into lots more problems, doing them a first time is always the hardest and I’m hoping to make some summer cotton ones after I do a winter wool version.

The pattern calls for me to make “phoney seam one stitch after the first SM and 1 before the second SM”

I’ve never done a phoney seam before…am I really going to let a stitch rip the entire length down the garment?

Beautifully knit. The onesie is going to be adorable.
I use a different stitch pattern as recommended herefor a false seam. I’d not seen the dropped stitch used before although I have seen a slipped stitch every other round which is close.

The seam will be more obvious because of the thin stripes which will carry one color over another. It’s up to you if you’d like to try the dropped stitch fake seam but for a baby garment, I skip it.

Back again seeking more clarifications!

I’m on the straps and pattern is as follows…

DOUBLE SIDED KNITTING FOR END OF STRAPS
ROW 1: (k1 sl1wyif, K1) repeat to end
ROW 2: (sl1wyif , k1, sl1wyif) repeat to end.

Then says…
Repat these 2 rows 8 times in total.
Fr colour changes work 2 rows for every 1 row in normal stripe pattern ( ie 8 rows MC, 8 rows CC)

I’ve a few questions here!
For row 1; does this mean I knit 1, then pull yarn to the front and go to purl but pull the stitch over to the right needle, the knit 1 and keep repeating?
When I do this I see I’m getting a bar not the front of my knitting which doesn’t look right especially when it’s on the first new row of a colour change!!

Row 2 : (sl1wyif , k1, sl1wyif) for this am I since its a purl row anyway, slipping the first stitch over tot right needle then pulling yarn back and doing a knit and then bringing the yarn back over to the front of my knitting and slipping a stitch over as if to purl?
[Note I understand its not a YO increase stitch but more that I’m bring bringing the yarn to the front of the needles etc]

The second big area of concern is this repeating these 2 rows 8 times.
Am I…

ROW 1: (k1 sl1wyif, K1) repeat to end
ROW 2: (sl1wyif , k1, sl1wyif) repeat to end.
ROW 3: (k1 sl1wyif, K1) repeat to end
ROW 4: (sl1wyif , k1, sl1wyif) repeat to end.
ROW 5: (k1 sl1wyif, K1) repeat to end
ROW 6: (sl1wyif , k1, sl1wyif) repeat to end.
ROW 7: (k1 sl1wyif, K1) repeat to end
ROW 8: (sl1wyif , k1, sl1wyif) repeat to end.

Is it that basically row 1-8 say in MC
And repeat rows 1-8 again in CC??

Clearly I’m confused! Errrrgh.
Again the bars created by doing the sl1wyif are concerning me that they might cause contrasting colours at the front.
I’ve looked at the photo and the colour stripes on the straps do appear to be a little bigger than the stripes in the win body…but maybe I’m just seeing things.

I hope I’m not confusing in what I’m asking!
Knitting is so addictive but also tough going when you’re tired and confused!

You’re going to be knitting a hollow tube for these straps by doing double knitting. Think of it as knitting half the sts on one row and slipping the other half. On row 2 you’ll knit the sts that were slipped on row 1 and slip the sts that were knit.

Both front and back rows are going to be knit rows for the straps. [U]Yes, slip the first st to the RH needle, bring the yarn to the back between the needles and knit the next stitch.[/U]

ETA: Yes, you have the sequence of the 8 rows correctly written. Do 8 rows in MC then 8 in CC. These rows will be a little shorter than in the main body because you’re only working half the sts each row so by working 8 row stripes you’re making up for the slightly shorter rows.

I got the back straps done,
Had I trusted myself last night and just kept going I would h ave seen it works out fine…but too many times I keep going and make a total mess , then have to rip back and don’t know where I am!

Anyway, I’m onto the front now and on the home stretch.
I am very pleased with them so far and will definitely be knitting these again in cotton for the summer.

There’s surprisingly (I feel) alot of work in them, though in reality I know there isn’t.

The pattern does have a lot nice detail, such as the straps but it will give a lovely, finished look. It’s worth the effort especially when you’re pleased with the result. Good going!

I am so pleased with them and think they look great and have you to thank. They are a great pattern that I’m going to knit again and learned lots of new techniques, which is always great.
