Hi, let me thank anyone in advance who replies and or helps me with this hard to phrase question.
I’m making the afghan in the Cables Untangled book. The blue beautiful one. I am starting the second of the 5 panels. The first panel I used a size 9 needle and my measurements came out perfect, now for the 2nd panel I just assumed I would use the same needle, I was very wrong.
The finished measurements are 10" x 15". In order to get those measurements I have to use a size 15 needle.
My question is this: Will the panels look terribly off due to the different needle sizes? I mean to go from a 9 to a 15 is a great difference and I want them to look symmetrical. Will it look okay or should I go down to the 9 and add the correct number of stitches to make it symmetrical?
If I’ve confused you just let me know and I’ll try and rephrase it.
Yes, I did test the 15’s. I first tried 13’s but it was short by an inch so I went up to the 15’s. It is a larger stitch, that’s why I was asking if I was doing it right. The original pattern calls for size 9’s but I used a 10 for the first panel.
Thank you so much for that link! I’m just starting panel B! You’re a lifesaver. :cheering:
I started making this, with larger needles and yarn, but found that the panels are bigger, but still in proportion to each other.
How far did you get? Once you start the chart, the number of stitches increases to accommodate the cables, plus you can block it.
I think if you switch to size 15’s it will be way too long once you complete the cable pattern since you can’t really just not knit the same number of rows.
I’ve only done the first 2" of the reverse stock. I didn’t want to start the pattern part until I knew I was doing it on the right needles.
So should I just go back to my 10’s that I used for the first panel?? Or maybe 11’s?? I’m not sure I can stretch it out to the 10" it calls for. Waddayathink?
Since the pattern isn’t one where it’s repeated until you get it long enough, you don’t really have that much flexibility as you might in some of the other panels.
What I did since I was changing the yarn is to make panel B first and then make panel C the same length. I sewed them together and am making panel D long enough to fit across the bottom as in the diagram.
My plan is to make E and F before I make A to make sure A is long enough.
Have you tried C to see how your gauge is on that one? I think it’s more important that B and C match than A. You can just make A longer if you have to.
Nope, haven’t tried C yet, but I will now that you suggested that! That’s true too about making A longer if I have to…
Man this is turning into something a little more complicated than my brain is liking at the moment. :teehee:
I guess I’ll be taking a looksie tomorrow at all of the panels and see exactly what you are talking about. I just assumed I’d use the same size needle for the whole thing.
Never assume. I’m always learning.
What do you mean you are switching yarn?? :scratchinghead:
I meant that instead of the yarn called for, I’m using a thicker yarn. I’m not changing yarn as I go. My concern was that when the pattern said to knit for 15 inches, for example, that wouldn’t equal the same number of rows as I would get with the thicker yarn.
What I did was look very closely at the number of rev. st. st. rows in the B panel (12, I think) and knit those, then the cable, then 12. I made the A panel to match in length. Now that I have those, hopefully I’ll be able to make the rest fit up.
I figure that since it doesn’t have to fit anyone and doesn’t have to be a particular size, I can fudge the sizes of the panels if need be to make them all fit together.
