Purling question with picture

Here is a picture of what I was trying to describe. You will see a couple of rows in the stitch changes, but then the rest all look like knit stitches…

This is what I get for trying to teach myself… :??

When you switched from knit to purl, you got one row of stockinette. That’s what stockinette is - constantly switching back and forth from knit row to purl row. Otherwise, knit stitches and purl stitches look identical.

okay… so what is the point of a purl stitch if it looks exactly like a knit stitch? Is the purl always used in connection with something else in order to create a different stitch, such as the stockinette?

When you knit every row, it is going to look the same as when you purl every row. I think that’s what Tab meant. You get a different look when you knit one row, purl one row–the v’s will be on one side and the bumps will be on the other.

When you switched, you purled a row and then knit a row–and got a row of stockinette.

If you knit one row, purl one row, you’ll see the difference between the two sides.
