I just started a new pattern to make a hippo, so as I am a novice I thought I would start with the ears. It says to cast on using the thumb method, easy enough, but then I have to purl. I end up just getting the same stitch transferred to the the other needle. I tried knitting it too but i end up with a long bit of yarn at the end, in a loop, that just won’t go away.
Sorry if this is confusing, I am using Sarah Keens, knitted wild animals book.
Please help lol Im completely confuzzled.
Also, what does knit ways or purl ways mean? and it says to make a stitch. I know how to increase but there is a different abbreviation for that. So how do I make one? Thanks a bunch
With the thumb CO you might be purling into the wrong leg of the st, try working into the other leg. Try the knit cast on, it’s easier to work into. Knit wise and purl wise means to insert the needle either as if to knit it, or as if to purl it; this is usually used if you’re just going to slip a stitch from one needle to the other without actually knitting or purling. There are several ways to ‘make’ a stitch, see the increases page to look at them. Which one it wants you to use is hard to say without seeing the pattern. If you can type in just one or 2 rows, that may be helpful.
It says:
Beg at lower edge using the thumb stitch and A cast on 8 sts.
P1 row
Inc row: k1, (m1, k1) to end.
Beg with p row, stocking-st 5 rows
Dec row: (k1’ k2tog) to end
Also what’s does the and A means?
Thanks so much for the quick reply (:
The ‘A’ would be color A I’m sure, look at the yarn requirements. It would be nice if they said how many sts you’re supposed to end up with after the inc row. But it probably means m1 by picking up the yarn between stitches and knit it through the back loop. Or you can do a backward loop - k1, make a loop, k1, make a loop, and so on.
Aha (: thank you
