We need a lot more information. What is the name of the pattern and please post a link if you have one. (Don’t post the entire pattern here)
Based on what you’ve written alone it looks like you should be using DK weight or possibly worsted. As for how many stitches… ?? Just not enough info to go on.
You would be trying for 5½ sts per inch or 22 over 4" on US size 6s, and apparently the row gauge doesn’t matter.
