Problems with rib stitch

I am knitting a hat and the instructions are to kit two then purl two.
Whenever I finish knitting two purl stitches for some reason there is a line of wool diagonally across the two. Everything looks very messed up. :frowning:
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

It sounds like you might be leaving the yarn in front when you start to knit again. Yarn is in back for knits and you bring it to the front between the needles to purl. Then you move it to the back between the needles to knit again,

Hi and welcome to Knitting Help!
You knit two, bring the yarn to the front between the needles and purl two, then take the yarn to the back, again between the needles. I’m notsure what is giving you the line of yarn. Do you think you could oost a photo?
Here’s a video which you can pause to see if you’re doing the rib the same way. (How you hold the yarn is an individual preference.)

thank you very much the videos were very helpful and i’ve carried on
