Problems with pattern

I am trying to knit a hat, and this is the pattern:
Cast on 40 sts.
Row 1 - Work in K2, P2, to end.
Row 2 - As row 1 repeat rows 1 and 2 until work measures 20cm from cast on edge.

Shaping of hat:
Next row - (K2,p2tog) repeat to end of row (30sts).
Next row - work stitches as they appear.
Next row - (K2,p1) repeat to end of row (20sts).
Next row - work sts as they appear.
Next row - K2tog to end of row.

That’s the last of the knitting
However, I don’t understand what it means by ‘work stitches as they appear’

Please can someone explain?

When you work stitches ‘as they appear’ it just means that if there is a knit stitch on your needle, knit it. If it’s a purl, purl it.

Knit the ‘v’ stitches and purl the bumps.

i find it a bit hard to differentiate, i have only been knitting for about a month
please could you tell me what pattern to do?

I assume this is done in the round, so…

Shaping of hat:
Next row - (K2,p2tog) repeat to end of row (30sts).
Next row - K2, P1 - repeat to end.
Next row - (K2,P2tog) repeat to end of row (20sts).
Next row - K2, P1 - repeat to end.
Next row - K2tog to end of row.

P.S. Corrected 3rd row for you as I believe it should have been (K2, P2tog) not (K2, P1), as you wrote.

Here is an image posted by our Jan in CA that will help you differentiate.

Right now you have k2,p2 ribbing.

After your first decrease of k2, p2tog, on the next row you’ll work k1, p2 across the rows on the wrong sides.

I got the impression that it was knit flat. It would be as she posted if there was only one decrease row.

Thank you
the pictures and instructions were very helpful, I understand now
and thanks for the correction to the 3rd row

I am slightly confused actually
Under shaping of the hat, you said I should (K2,P2tog) for the third row.
But when you said you corrected the third row for me you then said it was (K1,P2tog)
which is it please?

Shaping of hat:
Next row - (K2,p2tog) repeat to end of row (30sts).
Next row - work stitches as they appear.
Next row - (K2,p1) repeat to end of row (20sts).
Next row - work sts as they appear.
Next row - K2tog to end of row.

If the hat is knit flat–back and forth rather than in the round–follow these directions.

Since the hat is written for rows and not rounds, I assume it’s knit back and forth in rows, too. Is that right, Lailai?
The directions say that the stitch count for row 3 decreases from 30sts at the end of row 1 to 20sts at the end of row 3. Check the directions and make sure it’s not a (k2tog, p1), a decrease across row 3.
Can you give us a link to the pattern or a pattern name, please?

Good catch! Yes, a link or name of the pattern would be helpful.

Just a typo - since corrected
