When you start at the bottom edge of the poncho, the background stitch is stockinette (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side). The cable is also stockinette with purl sts on each side to set the cable panel off from the background. So the WS rows should be purled for the large area of background and the 9 stitch cable itself. The 2 sts on either side of the cable panel are knit on the WS (and so are the 3 sts between cables within the panel). This is basically a matter of work the sts as they appear on the WS, knit the Vs and purl the loops and you’ll be fine.

Love to see some pictures! I really do think this will be a stunning creation. I think it needs a blocking step at the end, judging from some of the more (and less) successful Ravelry projects.
