Problem with sleeves

Hi,
I’m having difficulty with increase in sleeve for baby cardigan. Pattern is from beginning, 7 rows of st-st, followed by 8th row knit (this is a purl row)this creates a rope-like pattern from 7th & 8th row. Continue in st-st on to 16th row (purl) this row I have to do k2m1, (k4,ml) 7 times, knit to end. It doesn’t seem to make any difference which form of m1 or increase I make I end up with a hole in the pattern (viewed videos advising on M1 etc.) and I can’t get the rope-like pattern as before. Please help, what am I doing wrong, I have tried various forms of inc. but can’t get desired effect or is my understanding of the 16th row increase the problem (I also needed help with this).

If you knit tight, m1 can leave a hole, so you can do them loosely. Also, small holes won’t be noticeable after you knit a few more rows and when you wash the item. They also aren’t as noticeable when you’re not as focused on the sts as you work them. Try a backward loop m1, work a couple rows, then put your knitting down and back up a few feet. You probably can’t see them at all.

When you do the M1 on a knit row, make sure that you insert the needle from front to back in the bar between the stitches and then knit into the smaller back loop. This should give you a M1 without a hole. It should also continue the row of purls on the front of the sweater. If it doesn’t look perfect, knit the next row and see if it evens things out a bit.

If it still doesn’t look right, work the knit row on the purl side as before and do the increases on the next (or previous) stockinette row.

Thanks Suzeeq a lot for your quick response and help, am I still correct in following in pattern i.e. 16th row (increase row) purl but knit this one.

It seems like it’s a knit row on the WS of stockinette like the 8th row which would make the garter/purl ridge pattern.

Thank you so much, will try your suggestion, lets hope this expected baby doesn’t reach school age before I crack this one.
